Victory Motorcycles reveals its first all-electric motorcycle

Building on the innovative design and engineering that produced the fastest U.S. electric motorcycle at the 2015 Isle of Man TT Zero race, Victory Motorcycles has introduced the 2016 Empulse TT, the first all-electric addition to the Victory lineup. The Victory Empulse TT is a fully electric street-legal sport bike that is as capable of carving tight lines on twisting roads as it is powering the daily commute. Building on Victory Motorcycle’s focus on performance, the Empulse TT features a sport bike-style aluminum beam-frame, an adjustable suspension, and aggressive brakes. With a combination of advanced technology and stylish, modern design, this unique new motorcycle delivers outstanding overall performance, zero-emission output, and a torquey motor.
“We have always been known for great handling and power, so the Empulse TT is an ideal fit in the expanding Victory lineup,” said Motorcycle Product Director Gary Gray.
“The Empulse TT was developed primarily as an electric motorcycle delivering a sporty ride,” said Victory Electric Product Manager Joshua Katt, “but with dual ride modes – ECO and SPORT – to choose from, and the addition of a gearbox, the Empulse TT is a versatile motorcycle that can be used for impressively sporty riding or as a casual commuter.”
The key features that allow Empulse TT to deliver a sporty riding experience include: a fully adjustable suspension featuring a single rear shock and inverted front forks; dual-disk front brakes that deliver confidence-inspiring high-performance stopping power; lightweight new cast aluminum wheels; the greatest lean angle in the electric class; and a sportbike-style riding position.
Steve Menneto, VP Motorcycles, said Victory Motorcycles is committed to expanding brand awareness and sales globally, and the Empulse TT will allow the brand to reach more markets. “This is a company that does not fear technology and progressive products, and we want to be strong in the electric motorcycle segment,” he said.
The Empulse TT shares some DNA with the original Brammo Empulse R motorcycle. Victory has been working with Brammo since 2011, but in January 2015 Victory’s parent company, Polaris Industries, acquired Brammo’s motorcycle assets. Since then, Victory engineers worked with the Brammo product team to achieve improvements in battery capacity, display function, and handling. The result is a Victory Empulse TT with advanced technology, impressive performance, and sporty styling that draw from the Isle of Man Zero TT race bikes.
The Victory Empulse TT is capable of top speeds of over 100 mph, and it has a high-capacity 10.4kWh battery. The bike has a built-in battery charger and an easily accessible SAE J1772 plug atop the bodywork in front of the seat. The bike’s Brammo Power Lithium Ion battery fully charges in just 3.9 hours using a Stage 2 charger (available as an accessory utilizing a 240V outlet). The bike will fully charge in 8.9 hours using a regular household 120V outlet.
In typical riding, the Empulse TT battery provides a rider with a range of about 65 miles, and a range of 100 miles is possible with throttle management and use of the bike’s regenerative charging. In preliminary testing, the bike demonstrated a Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) city range of 94 miles. The bike delivered an MIC “combined 70 mph highway and city range” of 57 miles.
Riders can make the most efficient use of the battery’s 10.4kWh of electricity by using the six-speed gearbox. Shifting and downshifting help to create regenerative power (under deceleration), and also produce a feeling familiar to experienced riders of the compression braking on gasoline-powered motorcycles.
The rider only needs to use the clutch when shifting between gears, not for taking off or coming to a stop. When coming to a stop, a rider can leave the bike in gear, or choose to click the shifter down (without pulling in the clutch) to put the bike in neutral. To take off from a stop, the rider simply needs to twist the throttle to unleash the liquid-cooled electric motor’s impressive torque.
In the Empulse TT’s proprietary transmission, neutral is found between 2nd and 3rd gears, and the transmission can be left in 3rd gear for most riding speeds and conditions. To begin riding, a rider can simply turn the bike’s power on, select 3rd gear (without the clutch), twist the throttle, and go.
Not all competitive electric motorcycles have gearboxes, so the Empulse TT gearbox gives the bike a significantly sportier feel, and it enhances a rider’s engagement with the bike.
In everyday riding conditions, the Victory Empulse TT can be operated in ECO mode, but it also has an optional SPORT mode for high-performance riding. In SPORT mode, 20 percent more battery power is released to the motor, resulting in enhanced acceleration.
SPORT mode also increases the amount of regenerative braking – or “regen” – which further increases the feeling similar to compression braking when the rider rolls off the throttle. Regen uses the inertia of the motorcycle to return energy from the motor back into the battery pack, which increases available energy. To select SPORT mode, a rider presses and holds the start button for 1 second.
The bike’s LCD data display features a speedometer, tachometer, gear indicator, and clock. It also displays the battery level as a horizontal bar accompanied by the percentage of battery energy remaining, and provides an estimate of remaining riding range.

The new Victory Empulse TT electric motorcycle is scheduled to be available for purchase in the United States in late 2015. Victory is in the process of determining global demand for the bike before announcing its international sales plan.

Similar to its RZRcousin, the RANGER High Lifter Edition features reduced gearing for more mud-specific torque with an added a heavy-duty reverse chain, high engine air and clutch intakes and outlet, arched lower A-Arms, 28 in/71.12 cm High Lifter Outlaw II tires and an improved drainage skid plate. Specific to RANGER, the vehicle features a Pro-Lock On-Demand All-Wheel Drive for quicker four-wheel drive engagement to muscle through the mud. Standard Electronic Power Steering (EPS) means the machine handles the tough stuff while reducing driver fatigue. The RANGER XP 900 EPS High Lifter Edition Stealth Black is equipped with a 4,500 lbs/2041 kg winch with integrated in-dash switches, specially-designed front bumper that provides higher winch access and rear bumper. Standard half doors provide protection from branches and brush when traveling muddy trails and the High Lifter graphics kit is an endorsement from one of the leaders in mud riding.
One of the first vehicles resulting from Polaris’ partnership with Brammo Inc., the two-seat RANGER EV Li-Ion Polaris Pursuit Camo offers more than three times the total battery lifespan of traditional acid batteries, more than twice the range (50+ miles*) on one charge to ensure the vehicle spends more time in use.
To complement the Lithium-Ion battery technology, the pure electric RANGER EV Li-Ion Polaris Pursuit Camo features a refined electrical architecture and a single 48-volt, high-efficiency, AC-induction motor. The new system also features a Battery Management Controller which continuously monitors battery usage for a more accurate representation of battery life. A Vehicle Control Module (VCM) allows for a new digital gauge with speedometer and improved accessory integration. The vehicle also is equipped with on-vehicle diagnostics for easier servicing, and offers many of the hardest working, smoothest riding features found on the RANGEREV such as Pro-Lock On-Demand, True All-Wheel Drive, VersaTrac Turf Mode, class-leading towing and exclusive Pro-Fit and Lock & Ride accessory integration.
Also new to the two-seat line is the addition of the hunt-ready RANGER 570 EPS. Built specifically for the demands of hunting, the RANGER 570 EPS Hunter Edition Polaris Pursuit Camo features the revolutionary Active Descent Control (ADC) system for more controlled descents, even under load, making it perfect for hunts in mountainous terrain.  Along with ADC, this vehicle features the Pro-Lock On-Demand All-Wheel Drive system for quicker engagement and optimal traction, a 3,500 lbs /1587kg winch, and dual Lock & Ride Gun Scabbards.
More power also comes to the RANGER line with the addition of high output ProStar engines to the RANGERCREW 900-5, RANGER CREW 900-6 models, RANGER XP 570 and RANGER CREW 570-6. The RANGERCREW 900 models will now boast 68 horsepower, similar to the RANGER XP 900 models, and the RANGERXP 570 and RANGER CREW 570-6 will now feature 46 horsepower.
Enhancements to the RANGER line include an updated hood design with an aggressive new look for theRANGER XP 900 and RANGER XP 570 and CREW vehicles. For maximum power delivery to the ground, theRANGER XP 900 EPS and CREW 900 painted models are now equipped with Pro-Lock On-Demand All-Wheel Drive.
Polaris Sportsman All-Terrain Vehicles (ATV) are known as the hardest working, smoothest riding ATVs on the market. For Model Year 2016, the Sportsman line adds three new models, including two for the mud lifestyle, in addition to several improvements and new color choices driven from customer input.
New to the Big Bore line for 2016, Polaris has partnered with High Lifter to offer two ATVs made for the mud, the Sportsman XP 1000 Stealth Black High Lifter Edition and Sportsman 850 Orange High Lifter Edition. With 85 horsepower and 78 horsepower respectively, the vehicles are not only powerful but the most-affordable mud units in their classes.
Both units have been designed from the ground up to tackle the mud. To ensure the power plants breathe, the units feature shielded high engine air and clutch intake/outlets as well as high mounted vent lines, which are essential for reliable performance.  For cooling, both vehicles have been equipped with a relocated, rack-mounted radiator with inverted dual fans, an industry-exclusive design that pulls clean air through the bottom of the radiator for improved cooling and reduced clogging. For more mud-specific torque, both units are equipped with a High and Low transmission with lower gearing. To put all the power and torque to the ground, the XP 1000 has the Polaris High Performance, Close Ratio Front Drive which provides quicker On-Demand four-wheel drive engagement to handle the toughest mud holes. Riders also will find that both units are designed to tackle the mud with the standard 29.5 in/74.9 cm High Lifter Outlaw II tires and a redesigned suspension featuring stiffer springs for higher ground clearance, exclusive front and rear high-arched, constant radius dual A-arms, and new articulating rear suspension designed to maximize traction in the deepest mud pit.
Additions found specifically on the Sportsman XP 1000 High Lifter Edition include custom paint and graphics, aluminum wheels, Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and an industry first handlebar-mounted mud bar to maximize control in the mud. The vehicle also features custom color matched, high-mounted front and rear bumpers, factory-installed Polaris 3,500 lb./1587 kg winch with sealed handlebar switch and front tow hooks.
For the entry-level consumer, Polaris also is introducing the new Sportsman 450 H.O., which delivers more power and performance for just $5,999 U.S. The Sportsman 450 H.O. features the smooth, reliable and proven Prostar engine delivering 31 horsepower and full-size capability at a 400cc class price. The vehicle shares many of the same features found on the Sportsman 570 including Polaris’ On-Demand, True AWD, proven MacPherson Strut front suspension, IRS and Lock & Ride accessory integration.
Improvements to the existing models for 2016 include 50 percent stronger front half shafts and improved driveline on all 850cc and 1000cc models. The Sportsman 850s also will have a new CST aggressive trail tire that works as great as it looks. Sportsman 450 H.O. and 570cc models will feature a new seat with more comfortable foam, durable seat base, new, more-powerful 660 watt stator to run more accessories, and added exhaust pipe shielding. The full line of Sportsman and Scrambler vehicles also receive a new, high capacity, high-flow air filter for improved air flow and dust filtration to the engine.
Since January 2014, the Polaris ACE has been redefining the off-road experience with the revolutionary, sit-in chassis that combines the nimble handling of an ATV with the security of a Side-by-Side. The result is a machine that is capable, comfortable and inspires confidence. For model year 2016, Polaris is introducing the next level of capable, confident and comfortable with the Polaris ACE 900 SP.
The ACE 900 SP brings big power to the ACE line-up with a 60 horsepower ProStar 900 engine featuring both Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) and Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) to bring the ACE experience to performance-minded customers.
Along with more power, more comfort comes to the ACE 900 SP with Polaris’ EPS system, the smoothest, most-responsive Power Steering System available. For optimum control, the front stabilizer bar improves handling and provides a confidence-inspiring ride. To tackle the toughest terrain, the vehicle also features new dual rate rear springs as part of the vehicle’s Independent Rear Suspension (IRS). The new springs provide a predictable and plush ride.  Paired with the 25 in/63.5 cm tires and Polaris’ High Performance Close Ratio On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD), the new ACE 900 SP can conquer almost anything that gets in its way.

Roadtrek, Count’s Kustoms Team up for Sturgis

Roadtrek Motorhomes Inc. is celebrating the 75th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally by teaming with Count’s Kustoms.
Roadtrek is the official RV of the 2015 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and partnered with Count’s Kustoms to create a one-of-a-kind Roadtrek 210 Popular and Harley Davidson motorcycle to help commemorate the event.
“We are honored to be the official RV of the Sturgis Rally, the Roadtrek lifestyle is something that those in the motorcycle community love, the ability to always be able to bring your bike with you and have a place to call home no matter where you ride is a great feeling.” stated Karyn Torcoletti, director of marketing at Kitchener, Ontario-based Roadtrek, in a press release.
Count’s Kustoms is a classic car and chopper customization and restoration shop located in Las Vegas, specializing in painting and bike building. The company was founded by Danny “The Count” Koker and shot to fame thanks to their distinctive custom work, also showcased on the television show “Counting Cars” on the History Channel.
The custom paint project was led by lead painter Ryan Evans and Shannon Aikau, master bike builder at Count’s Kustoms, who took their inspiration from the Black Hills of South Dakota where the rally takes place.
“Roadtrek is thrilled to be showcasing at Sturgis again this year. We wanted to do something special to celebrate the 75th anniversary and teaming up with Danny and his crew at Count’s Kustoms was the perfect fit for us.” said Torcoletti. “It is going to be a great week and we are excited to have Ryan and Shannon join us for the rally and showcase their amazing creativity.”
Evans and Aikau will be in Roadtrek’s booth at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Aug. 6 and 10 a.m. on Aug. 7 to sign autographs, take pictures and talk about their custom-painted Roadtrek 210 Popular and Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
“We’re excited to head on up to Sturgis with Roadtrek. We hope you dig our spin on the Black Hills Roadtrek and Harley Electra Glide,” said Evans.
