The young Captain Kirk rode a futuristic motorcycle in last year's "Star Trek" movie. Now, the actor who portrayed the original Captain Kirk is donating his own motorcycle to charity.

According to the USA Today's Drive On blog, actor William Shatner is donating his Harley-Davidson for an auction to be held June 27th at Planet Hollywood Resort in Las Vegas. The auction benefits the Roddenberry Foundation: an organization that supports education, children, and environment.

Shatner has been a motorcycle fan since high school, when he "borrowed" a neighbor's motorcycle for rides. He tells the story in a video featured on YouTube.

The bike is a very rare 1894 Hildebrand & Wolfm├╝ller “motorrad”, just one of 800 to 2000 motorrads ever made according to the New York Times story.

The motorrad was modest on features compared to today’s high tech models. How modest? How about no clutch, starter, or brakes? Even in its rough condition, this ancient bike could fetch up to $90,000 at auction.

A recent story in the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel reports that used bikes sales are warming up as fast as the weather.

According to the story, the rough economy made motorcycle manufacturers like Harley and Suzuki cut back on production and put fewer new bikes on the road.

With big savings on used bikes and improved demand from motorcycle buyers, dealerships are finding their inventory is moving faster than before.
