Making off-road bikes street legal

NCtimes.com features a story on how making off-road motorcycles street legal became a business for one rider.

Alan Roach, an off-road bike enthusiast, developed a kit that adds lights and turn signals to off-road bikes. Not all states welcome "dual-sport" bikes as street bikes. California has strict laws limiting off-road bikes.

Roach made the first conversion kit for his own bike, eventually turning his garage business into a company called Baja Designs.

"Can You Survive the Nor'easter?"

January 15, 2008 Heislerville, NJ ….The Northeast Off-Road Championship non-profit organization announces 2008 as its inaugural season. "This is a newly organized Off-Road Hare-Scramble Series developed by a group of experienced off-road racers and outdoorsmen to provide an exciting off-road racing and fellowship experience for the entire family. NEOC promotes a family oriented atmosphere focused on sportsmanship, integrity, pride, family and friendship with a great mix of competition for all levels of riders," says Brian Hartem NEOC president. "The NEOC plans to offer a mix of competition and a commitment to providing the most exciting mix of off-road events in the Northeast," added Mr. Hartem.

The NEOC SERIES is an Adult, Youth Hare-Scramble and Pit Bike Championship Series. The courses will be a mix of woods, rocks, mountains, South Jersey sand and gnarly roots, Enduro-cross and Motor-cross courses. It will be some of the best terrain to hone and challenge even the best riders’ off-road skills.

The racing season runs from March to September with an awards banquet scheduled in October. Races will be held in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. NEOC works with landowners to utilize current racing locations and plans to expand as the series grows. The NEOC team is committed to maintain and preserve the environment used for each race. After each race NEOC staff and volunteers restore the trails so they can be used for other outdoor recreation including walking, hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking.

Races will be scheduled as 2-day events to offer extended riding time for all levels of riders. Gates will open on Saturdays with Pee-Wee classes starting the races at 3:00 pm lasting 1-hour on a 2+ mile course. Pit-Bike racing will commence between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm depending on light conditions and will run a 2-moto format. Saturday night’s events conclude with a variety of family entertainment.

Sunday races commence at 8:30 am with Youth Classes racing for 1-1/2 hours, C-Classes start at 11:00 am and run for 1-1/2 hours and the Main Event Racing will start at 1:30 pm with a 2-hour race. Hey from the UK, it would be great to have more events like this over here. It is somewhat lacking here and I think it just needs a great idea. How did you get this started and build it? Thanks
